The Owl House Foundation is a NPO (Not for Profit Organisation), based in Nieu‑Bethesda, and is dedicated to preserving and promoting the extraordinary legacy of Helen Martins, the visionary artist behind The Owl House.
Our work centres on safeguarding The Owl House and its surrounding Camel Yard as a National Heritage Site, while ensuring that its cultural, artistic, and historical significance continues to resonate with visitors from around the world.
What We Do
Preservation
We protect the integrity and authenticity of The Owl House and the Camel Yard, ensuring that this unique environment is carefully maintained for future generations.
Promotion
We support cultural tourism and creative exchange by positioning The Owl House as a landmark destination within South Africa’s artistic and heritage landscape.
Education
Through educational resources and programmes, we share the story of Helen Martins, outsider art, and the rich history of The Owl House with visitors, students, and researchers.
Community Support
We work alongside the Nieu‑Bethesda community, supporting local artists and contributing to the town’s vibrant cultural ecosystem.

Our Purpose
The Owl House Foundation plays a vital role in sustaining one of South Africa’s most distinctive artistic heritage sites — ensuring that The Owl House continues to inspire curiosity, creativity, and reflection for generations to come.
Our Board consists of volunteers offering their expertise on a non-renumeration basis. The Board is elected bi-annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) by members with voting rights of the Owl House Foundation.
